Quality respectful relationship education programs have been shown to help increase student's personal safety, increase student's confidence and self-esteem along with supporting them to making healthy decisions as they grow older
Reduces coerced sexual activity
At a secondary school level, specialised respectful relationships education has been shown to delay the first experience of sexual relationship's
- reduce sexual transmitted infections and unplanned pregnancies
- reduce coerced sexual activity and sexual assault
Increases confidence and self esteem
Increasing young people’s confidence and ability to negotiate consensual sexual activity that is mutual, respectful, communicative, safe and a pleasurable experience in the future
Respectful Relationships Education bolstered by new program

The Palaszczuk Government has delivered an updated and upgraded suite of resources for the delivery of respectful relationships education in Queensland schools, including a public online hub for families and students
New and strengthened information on concepts like consent education, reporting of sexual assault, ethical decision-making, coercive control, forms of abuse and drivers of gender-based violence have been incorporated into the new Respect program
The Respect program will support teachers with the resources they need to provide comprehensive, age-appropriate respectful relationships education, with a $15.5 million investment in professional development and specialist advisors
“In March 2021 I instigated a comprehensive review to make sure we were delivering the best age-appropriate resources and materials to our schools
“We consulted more than 180 stakeholders including subject matter experts, parents, teachers, principals, and most importantly, students themselves, “Students told us they wanted to talk about consent in a direct and mature way – no euphemisms or gimmicks – and they wanted to be engaged in discussions that would help them respond to real-life issues”
Earlier this year, education ministers from across Australia announced that consent education would be mandatory in the national curriculum from 2023, “Queensland’s updated Respect materials are now available online in a Respectful Relationships Education hub, which also includes publicly available resources for parents and high school students,” Ms Grace
Attorney-General Shannon Fentiman said the important initiative is part of the Palaszczuk Government’s response to the Women’s Safety and Justice Taskforce, “The respectful relationships education initiative is critical, as we strive to help students build safe, supportive, and respectful relationships,” Ms Fentiman said

Age appropriate lessons for year 7 - 12

The program has been designed by Tessa Thornton to provide a positive learning outcome for all students, following the national framework and a whole-school approach
The 4 lessons cover the content descriptors in the Australian curriculum appropriate to the age of the child
Human Reproduction ~ The anatomy and human reproductive system, slang words and their biological name, female menstruation, the ovary sperm courtship
How we grow - human development, puberty and adolescence, self - pleasure, dreams, romantic relationships and feelings
Respect, communication and consent ~ the role of gender, stereotypes, sexuality, respect, romantic friendships, coercion, power imbalances, the law and sexual decision-making
Choice and safety ~ Choice and Safety Body safety, protective behaviours, risks of technology, sexual assault, sexually transmitted diseases and blood-borne viruses
Topic 1 ~ Personal and social awareness
Year 7 & 8 ~ Managing emotions and gender stereotypes
Year 9 & 10 ~ Media, stereotypes and emotional self-regulation
Year 11 & 12 ~ Human rights, the law, informing respectful relationships, power dynamics in relationships and conducting a respectful relationship
Topic 2 ~ Respectful interactions
Year 7 & 8 ~ Proactive communication and promoting inclusion
Year 9 & 10 ~ Advocating for gender equality and ethical decision making
Year 11 & 12 ~ Self-regulation in relationships, ethical decision making, negotiation within relationships and advocating for gender equality
Topic 3 ~ Protective behaviours
Year 7 & 8 ~ Resilient behaviours, help-seeking and reporting
Year 9 & 10 ~ Protective laws and responsible e-behaviour
Year 11 & 12 ~ Bystanding and upstanding, self-protection (offline), self-protection (online) and using the law to protect yourself and others
